Chapter 19

We spent the rest of the day preparing for our mission. Despite our need for haste, we still had to make sure we were fully prepared to survive in hostile territory for an extended period of time. All the weather reports predicted a blizzard would blow in the next morning, which would provide the perfect cover for our infiltration.

While my power armor and Eris’s uniform would suffice for us, the others needed cold-weather clothing. Cassiopeia commandeered the costume vendor’s booth and machinery to sew appropriate outfits for Ari, Jenn, and Zehra.

“He should thank me, the upgrades I’m making to his machinery and software are priceless for riffraff like him,” she sniffed.

During the day’s bustle, I tried to check in on Archie, but the local hospitals were overflowing. Most had only suffered minor burns, cuts, or smoke inhalation. The staff I talked to confirmed Archie had been admitted but they weren’t able to track him down. I hoped that he was alright.

It was dark by the time we finished our preparations. Eris had spent most of the day on the phone, speaking to her boss and various officials at the UN. None of them were happy with the situation but they quietly approved of our operation.

Ari and Jenn busied themselves with prep work. They were determined to carry their own weight and prove the extent of their growth over the past few months.

Zehra retired to her suite to work, claiming she wanted to prepare some tools for the trip.

I coordinated with Franz and Emma, planning our infiltration. I detested working with The Widow, but she was an exceedingly competent villainess, that much I had to begrudgingly admit.

It was late by the time I returned to the hotel. Ari, Jenn, and Eris had already gone to bed, trying to get some sleep before our pre-dawn flight into Chadevania.

Breaking off after a stressful final meeting with Franz and The Widow, I headed toward my room, intending to sack out for a few hours of sleep. I was just stepping past Zehra’s door when I heard someone call out.

“Doctor?”

Turning, I saw Zehra peeking at me through the open door.

I turned and gave her a wan smile. “Are you ready?”

“My equipment is prepared and my costume should be ready by tomorrow morning,” she answered. “So, while…”

She trailed off.

“I want to talk,” she admitted, opening the door wider.

“Of course,” I answered, shaking off my fatigue.

Zehra’s suite was a smaller version of my own, and it was crowded with machine parts, tools, and boxes of scrap.

“Just a few odds and ends,” she said, clearing a spot for us to sit on the sofa. “Sadly, Iron Vanguard’s suit and my other winnings were in the warehouse, I hadn’t picked them up yet, so they were stolen along with everything else.”

“We’ll get them back,” I assured her.

She ducked her head. “That’s not what troubles me. This entire trip, I’ve been pondering what I want, taking Eris’s and the other’s advice into account, and I’ve come to no conclusive answer.
